Excursion opportunity: the “Way of St. James”, by bus or on foot
The “Camino de Santiago de Compostela”, also known in English as the “Way of St. James”, is a collection of old pilgrimage routes which cover all Europe. They all have Santiago de Compostela city in North West Spain as their final destination. According to legend, the remains of the Apostle James were transported by ship from Jerusalem to the North of Spain where they were rediscovered in the 9th century. The Way of St James was declared a “Cultural European Journey” in 1987, and then dedicated as a “World Heritage Site” by UNESCO in 1993.
The proposal is to focus on the coastal route within the Basque Country which runs alongside the Cantabric Sea either by bus or on foot. The walking excursion, for which basic hiking equipment is recommended, will cover one stage of about 20 km to arrive at Zarauz. The bus tour will start in Biarritz (France) near San Sebastian and will also go to Zarauz by road, following related St James´ routes and visiting various fishing villages. Both groupes will meet for lunch in a traditional Basque restauraunt.
